It had an EC-121 flapping its wings. this was a round orange patch with black and silver embroidered letters and plane. We all had them in 1970/71. Mine was on a work jacket that disappeared in Edzell several years later. Anyone have a BIG LOOKS SPOOKS PATCH? Please contact ct&navyct.com if you do.
VQ-1 rotated P3's BIG LOOK 31 and 32 between Danang and Atsugi. VQ-1 also rotated EC-121's BIG LOOK 24 and 25 in 1970.
The EC121 was not much fun for the CTO. The comms posit was on the port side aft of the cockpit and had a small "skylight" at about 10 o'clock on the fuselage. The keys on the TTY keyboard were pressed in on the left side like someone had stood on it to see out the peep hole. ( IT WASN'T ME!) Imagine trying to type up a WW on a keyboard like that! P3's were really cool for the "O" brancher. The comms posit was starboard just aft of the cockpit with a big bubble window. The TTY was a mighty-mite with a fold out keyboard but it was better than the EC121 setup. The P3 comm space had a spare radio (and of course a very good antenna) to pick up current U.S. music on Radio Malaysia.
