Relaxing between missions: CTISN Mike Farmer, CPL.... Phil Whorley? Not sure.. 1970 "Z-Grams" were coming out and beards were authorized. As CNO, Admiral Zumwalt issued "Z-Grams" by ALNAV message making drastic changes in many regulations. The Navy barracks on Danang Air Base housed the "back of the plane" enlisted guys. The heads and showers were across the muddy road. A large mud puddle gets larger when it rains and this is where sailors got dunked when promotion, advancement results were announced. 1970.

These photos were taken in the EM club on the Danang Air Base. I think it was around Christmas because there was a "floor show" (Nothing outrageous, it IS the EM Club, but I'm not posting those pictures,) I'm not sure of the exact date but it was in late 1970. The Z-Grams from new CNO Admiral Zumwalt were coming out and beards were authorized. CTOSN (it might have been CTO3 by then) took immediate advantage and started growing one.

The enlisted barracks on Danang Air Base are shown in the photo below. The heads and showers were acrossed the muddy road in the one story buildings. The mud puddle shown is much bigger after rain. When advancement results were annnounced, the crew carried some of the selectees down the stairs and dumped them into the mud,. Sort of a wetting down. This was in late 1970.
